A couple of things from today’s editions illustrate the dismal state of journalism in Toronto newspapers.
The National Post’s, front page report of John Baird’s absurd and totally unsubstantiated declaration that implementing the Kyoto accord would toss the Canadian economy into a recession comparable to that experienced in the early 1980s is illustrated by a photo of men lining-up for food in the “Dirty Thirties“. That’s about as relevant as equating the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837 with the American Civil War. No wonder, the Post’s readership is in decline.
And The Toronto Star, under a headline that Toronto is on the verge of going broke, tells us:
”Toronto is on the verge of bankruptcy and only quick and drastic intervention from Queen's Park can avert massive service cuts, say the city's top bureaucrats.“
How about another option – Toronto politicians getting their spending under control? Even if the province is short-changing the city $71 million, as the mayor claims and the provincial treasurer denies, that’s barely 10% of the city’s overspending. It’s going to be a long four years of this council but The Star will be here every step of the way to blame anyone but the unionists and socialists at city hall.
