Media were alive last night with reports of the government’s announcement of a plan to curtail immigration by “strippers”, aka adult entertainers. Let’s be clear - this is about little more than sending a sap message to those in the religious, moral right wing of the CPC constituency who have been aggrieved of late by some of the government’s other actions or in-actions.
The latest data (2005) indicate a total of 10 - count them - ten - visas were granted for adult entertainers. Canada’s immigration officers already have all the power they need under existing regulations so amendments to the Immigration Act are unnecessary. By driving a small problem underground, the government will not preserve vulnerable women (and men) from exploitation but make it more likely they will fall victim.
Canada’s new government has failed to implement most of the federal Accountability Act, the keystone of its 2006 campaign. It has failed to come up with a workable solution to the gun registry issue which will placate its rural voters and satisfy urban residents and Canada’s police services. It has failed to meet 80% of its reduced-waiting-times for health care commitment. It has failed to ban gay-marriages (sometimes failure can be a good thing). But concerned church goers in Alberta can be assured, Canada’s New Government is going to stop those 10 erotic dancers from getting to Montreal or Toronto. Way to go Steve! A man after small hearts and minds everywhere.
