Finality the race for the Us Democratic Party presidential nomination is over, save for the formality of the convention. Barack Obama would seen to have the nomination in hand and, in her defeat, Hillary Clinton is lobbying for the vice-presidential nomination No doubt she and Bill think they can still run the party, and the nation, from Number One Observatory Circle and then, as Hillary would potion out, there is always the chance of Obama , ummm , dying. It’s always good to be prepared.
An Obama/Clinton ticket might have some merit as a means of unifying a split party and attracting those voter cohorts (women over 40 and uneducated/unemployed white males) that have ignored Obama’s message of hope and change. Her speech in New York last night, however, was ample evidence that she does not put the Democratic Party’s best interests first and that she is not deserving of the nomination. Her speech was one of a candidate who refuses to accept that she is not the chosen one; her refusal to announce the end of her campaign and to invite her supporters to unite in support of the party’s nominee was immature and destructive. No one can reasonable argue that she has not had time to accept the results and contemplate the best strategy for the party.
Canadians observe back-room manoeuvring in the Liberal Party and remark that the “back-stabbing“ will prevent Stéphane Dion from winning the next federal election here. Hillary Clinton is not back-stabbing; she is firing broadsides into the Obama campaign, perhaps in the belief that she will get another chance in 2012 if he fails in November.
If the Billary team sincerely believes that a Democrat should assume The White House next year, then they must immediately announce that Hillary’s campaign is over and that the mutually support Obama; and then they must go away and be silent until the party convention and await Obama’s decision. Republicans will make mince-meat of Obama if he is seen, as he will be, as unable to control Hillary. How can he manage the Congress, the nation and international relations if he cannot even control his own fellow senator?
Nominating a vice presidential candidate is the prerogative of the presidential nominee. Until Hilary stands down and lets Obama assume the mantle of leadership and authority, she is not deserving of a place on the ticket.
One impediment to Hillary’s immediate suspension of her campaign is her huge debt and the illegality of her continuing to accept donations once her campaign ends. The Obama campaign apparently is flush with cash. This may be the time for his officials to offer to pay Hillary’s debts on the condition she go quietly into the summer night.
