Most of us who are old enough to be members of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) could not have imagined, a few years ago, that such a mainstream group would launch a chapter devoted to the interests of gays and lesbians. The announcement of CARP’s Pink Chapter came as an even more pleasant surprise than that of the York University Alumni’s “Pride Mixer”, tomorrow’s party for gay and lesbian York grads. Now I wouldn’t be surprised by a Pride Week edition of Zoomer magazine or a CARP float in Toronto’s Pride parade. Talk about timing. I was sitting with my CARP membership renewal letter on my desk and wondering if it was worth renewing. My question has been answered.
CARP’s email advising members of the new chapter included greetings and best wishes from Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff as well as the Hon Senator Nancy Ruth and the Hon Scott Brison. Did the prime minister’s office delegate the letter-writing job to the senator to avoid any gay-positive message being linked to the great leader? Just wondering.
