Immodesty and extramarital-sex cause earthquakes, according to an Iranian cleric, and must be avoided to prevent terrible human injury. One more thing to trouble the youth of the world.

A senior Iranian cleric has given a new reason for women to cover up. If they don't dress modestly, Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi claims, this leads to adulterous affairs. These, in turn, lead to earthquakes. "Many women who dress inappropriately ... cause youths to go astray, taint their chastity and incite extramarital sex in society, which increases earthquakes," the Ayatollah told worshippers at Friday prayers in Tehran.

It's easy to laugh at the idiocy of such statements and hope the majority of Iranians are laughing just as hard behind their veils and walls of home.
But it's also profoundly sad that the clerics have been able to beat a population into such submission that they are not immediately laughed from their mosques. Have the people of Iran been so brainwashed that they can be made to believe this nonsense? Or do they know better but nod in agreement to safeguard their physical and fiscal well-being?
It's troubling, too, that more or less profound examples of brainwashing can be found around the world, from Iran to Korea and right back home to Ontario where the self-styled "Christians1 " have already begun to protest the planned new sex-education curriculum.
The changes came to light Tuesday, when members of a religious, “family-focused” coalition threatened to pull their children out of school on May 10 unless Premier Dalton McGuinty abandons the changes.

They would have everyone wait for a church-wedding and then only do it in the night with the lights off. Maybe we won't experience earthquakes, but we will suffer more teen pregnancies and suicides as a result of the idiocy being spewed so close to home.
