In what looks like a rush to prevent more erosion of support, Premier Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals Friday declared declared a moratorium on offshore industrial wind turbines. The announcement from the Ministry of Energy stated; “No Renewable Energy Approvals for offshore have been issued and no offshore projects will proceed at this time.”

I'm encouraged to learn residents of the Scarbourough Bluffs and Toronto Beach communities will not have to look out on hideous windmills and birds traversing Lake Ontario will be less likely to be chopped to bits. But wind farms in rural Ontario are just as ugly and just as hazardous to livestock and farm families. Drive along highway #9 from Orangeville to Arthur and you will see opposition to windmills is not limited to Beachers sipping organic, fair-trade coffee in Queen St cafés. Real farmers growing real food for real people are also opposed to this intrusion of their land.
Wind farms are an ugly blight and, possibly, dangerous intrusion. And they will never be a realistic answer to meeting Ontario's energy needs. The Ontario energy minister should be extending the moratorium of wind energy to cover the entire province.
