I have just been grazing the CTV Newsnet coverage of the Liberal leadership candidates presentations to the LCP Ontario general meeting in Toronto (unfortunately, TV coverage began part-way into the event and Scott Brison's comments were not broadcast).
It's early in the campaign and three minute don't tell one much, but all the candidates spoke clearly and with passion for their country and their party. Their well-merited criticism of the Harper government was scathing: SH's reneging on the Kelowna Accord and the Kyoto Protocol, his shameless violation of his own campaign commitments to accountability, democratic renewal and open government, his cancellation of the national child care program launched with the co-operation of the provinces... the list goes on and will only grow in the months ahead.
I was pleased to see there is not a poor speaker among the candidates (Chretien and Martin should have taken note of the women and men around them). Most demonstrated a sense of humour (something no one in the CPC seems to possess). Even the vanity candidates got in some good lines - the best coming from Hedy Fry who could claim to having defeated the last conservative prime minister.
The delegates to the Ontario general weekend are fortunate to have the weekend to mingle with the candidates. We can all look forward to getting to know them better before voting begins in the autumn.
