James Christie, today, focuses on the space gay athletes, encouraged by Tewksbury's coming-out (and that of other athletes) are claiming in the once tediously heterosexual world of organised sport. His commentary, in the sports pages, also is likely to get more eyeballs than Laura Robinson's in the Saturday book review section.
I know, from personal experience, how the gay sports movement - Gay Games, World OutGames, Frontrunners International, International Gay and Lesbian Acquatics Association and dozens of others - has helped men and women come to terms with themselves, while building better and healtheir lives. It's also doing a lot to wear down some of the ages-old prejudices that have destroyed the self-esteem and lives of too many gay youth. Tewksbury's new book, while documenting his own suffering on the way to the top of the Olympic mountain, furthers the mission.
