CTV News reported a couple of days ago that the Conservative government would call the vote on reopening the same-sex marriage law “early in December” to potentially embarrass the new Liberal leader. Today, The Globe and Mail advises that the PM has cancelled his participation in an Canada/Europe summit opening Nov 27, to be close to the House of Commons, because of the minority situation.
The PM knows very well that the Liberals are not going to bring down the government the same week as their leadership convention occurs. So why do I detect the something odiferous in the air? Maybe it’s to avoid, as has been reported, criticism from European leaders for Canada’s failure to make progress on Kyoto commitments, but the PM seems rather immune to such opprobrium from Canadians.
Will the marriage vote be called while the Liberal MPs are in Montreal? How many buses and how long does it take to get 100 MPs back to the House of Commons?
Could the PM be plotting to lose a confidence vote before Christmas and send a days-fresh Liberal leader to the hustings for a January election?
