For the first time in 39 years I have a pet.
Growing up on a farm, I had many cats who were pets as well as working cats with a job to do chasing mice. Frankie has never had a pet and after Christmas I agreed it was time. Frankie was concerned about temperament and appearance and wanted to go the extra for a pure-bred. No shelter cat for him – it had to be an aristocat.
Frankie tracked down this 8-month old boy before we went to Japan and was about to close a deal when the original breeder intervened drawing on his right to re-claim an un-neutered cat if a change of ownership was under consideration. It was a disappointment but nothing we could do. Two days ago, the owner wrote to advise that the breeder had waived the recall rights and if we were still interested we could have him. So yesterday, were drove to Welland for a personal inspection. It took us about a minute to make up our minds. His previous owner is moving to Alberta to a "no pets" building.
For now, his name is Magni (son of the Norse god Thor [Magni means strong] and also the name of an Icelandic rock star who became famous on the CBC show Supernova), which we may or may not change. He's a bit nervous in his new surroundings but very curious to explore his new house and we see progress by the hour as he warms to us and wants to be close and play for as long as we will spend with him.
He is a pure-bred Exotic (I didn't know there was such a thing until January) The breed was developed in the USA, in the 1960s, crossing North American Shorthairs with Persians. His colouring is "sealpoint" and he has brilliant blue eyes. We have a couple of months to get him neutered before he starts to get randy, but want him to calm and adjust to us before we cart him off the the vet. He is not going to want to go back in the carrier after the long trip from Welland.
Now to adjust to the rigours of parenting.
