This in the vein of “those who can, do’ those who can’t teach”. with credit to Jeff Gaulin writing in The Hill Times (Jan 14, 2008), on the occasion of Sir John A Macdonald’s birthday. Gaulin writes that Sir Wilfred “Laurier called Macdonald’s life “the history of Canada’ (while) George Brown called him a ‘disgrace’.” If it weren’t that Laurier was a newspaper man who became one of Canada’s greatest prime ministers, one might be inclined to think of those, who like Globe founder Brown, choose to denigrate the skills required to govern in the absence of leadership abilities of their own. Those who can, do, and those who can’t take up journalism.
January 11th would have been a better choice for a new holiday than February’s “Family Day”; what other “new world” country doesn’t honour its founder? But in the absence of compelling demand for a January holiday, I’ll second Gaulin’s proposal to honour Sir John with a June 6th celebration.
