shooting...with guns...in the city...

Two visions of gay/lesbian athletics have been emerging over the past four years or so since the Federation of Gay Games withdrew its approval of Montréal as host of the 2006 Games and the World QutGames was founded in response. The OutGames have evolved with a much more international spirit while the Gay Games consolidated the America-first ethos.

It is with sadness that I read that the 2010 Gay Games will introduce a new event – sport shooting! That would be with guns, in the city of Cologne. Now which national gay sporting federation would push for bringing guns to the largest and friendliest athletic event the world knows? I don’t expect that guns will have much place in the 2009 World OutGames in Copenhagen

We can be assured, at least, that Toronto now will never be a contender to host the Gay Games, given the city’s position on gun sports. And that might be a good thing for Toronto and for gay/lesbian athletics.
