Toronto media are in a flap today, following another shooting, discussing whether the TTC is safe. There are even calls for the mayor and TTC chairman to explain what they are doing to make the TTC and they are trotting out the numbers about cameras on buses and the additional police to be posted to the transit system this. These would be the police the federal government promised a couple of years ago but only started funding in 2009.
The issue is not the TTC and stationing a few dozen more police on the subway is not the solution. The problem is that the streets have become unsafe and little progress is being made in getting the guns out of the hands of the thugs and drug dealers. Make the streets safe and the TTC will take care of itself. That is the challenge for three levels of government.
