To the 60% of Canadians who did not vote Conservative, let's shake our heads, make a list of priorities and prepare to very vigilant.

Conservative strategist and communications adviser Jamie Watt put it well when he described Opposition Leader Jack Layton as the man who gets to ask the first question the prime minister won't answer. We have very little power in the coming years and must expect our rights to be infringed by a government the majority of us did not choose.

To say I'm anxious about an election outcome that has given virtually unfettered power to a man who doesn't like Parliament, doesn't like the Supreme Court, doesn't like democracy, doesn't like citizens' rights to information about their country and government; in fact one who doesn't like Canadians much, would be an under-statement. Right now I am at a loss to imagine how this prime minister can or will be held to account by progressives who constitute the majority of Canadians.

This is not just politics as usual. Be very vigilant, we must.
