It was a disappointing sense of ‘dega vu’ that flooded over Liberal on Monday as accusations of fraud were hurled between the Joe Volpe and Michael Ignatieff leadership teams and Volpe vowed to stay in the race to fight the malicious things being said about him. That one of the first to leap to his defense was disgraced former-minister Alphonse Gagliano says a lot about how many friends Joe retains. Their mutual whining that they have been ostracized from the party hierarchy because they are Italian did nothing to add to their reputation.
It didn’t help that former Chretien aide, Eddy Goldenberg, has chose this holiday gift-buying season to release his tell-all book about life in the PMO and the rift between Chretien and Paul Martin.
The Conservatives are predictably delighted by the troubles in the Liberal ranks as it draws attention from the Elections Canada investigation into the possibly illegal financing of their 2005 policy convention. They have grown so accustomed to benefiting from improprieties in Liberal ranks that they are oblivious to the shenanigans in their own party. How long before someone mentions how nomination meetings in Quebec were run during Brian Mulroney’s tenure as PC leader?
As for Liberal leadership contenders, the challenge is keep a low enough profile to escape the mud slinging while still capturing the attention and hearts of party members.
