Wrong and stupid is the only way to describe the Ontario government’s move to exempt its casinos from the province’s smoke-free Ontario legislation. The minister of health promotion may be correct when he states the legislation never applied to casinos, since they are different from bars and restaurants. Just what the differences are that warrant an exemption is unclear. If charity-operated bingo halls are not exempt, why are the provincially owned casinos? Might it have anything to do with protecting revenues flowing into government coffers?
The smoke-free Ontario legislation was adopted to protect employes and customers of ALL public establishments in Ontario. If the government continues to exempt itself from the legislation, it better prepare for a vigourous challenge from the restaurant, bar and entertainment industry and to face the wrath of non-smokers.
