We may never know if it was, at least partially a result of the Conservative Party’s and Stephen Harper’s attacks, but the Parti Québecois staged a resurgence in yesterday’s Québec provincial election. There may be no immediate danger of another referendum and separation has lost its prominence in the PQ agenda, but the PQ is again the Official Opposition/government in waiting.
When the federal government cannot distinguish between nationalists and separatists (despite having boasted of recognising Québecers as a nation) and plays to the basest instincts of its membership, when Conservative Party members call elected MPs from Québec “frogs” in the House of Commons, it is a wonder that the PQ gain was not much more.
